The storm raged all night. Howling winds. Crashing. Banging. Streaks of lightning flashing in the bedroom. Thunder so loud my cat crawled into bed with me, something he’d never done. In the morning there was no power. Telephone lines were down. A huge tree, almost three feet in diameter, had fallen across the length of the two entrances to the oval cul-de-sac where I lived, making it impossible for anyone to enter or leave. People gathered around the fallen tree, wondering what to do.

Collected Works

In 2011 Collected Works Bookshop posted was moving from the corner on one street to the corner on the street behind it. Volunteers were requested to help move books from the old store to the new one. I hadn’t heard about it until a friend asked if I was planning to help with the move. “What move?”

“Collected Works is changing location.” I’m going. Should be fun. Want to come?”

NextDoor is a neighborhood on-line site where people post thoughts, situations, conditions, questions, and photos of interesting/odd creatures and landscapes. One day, I read a posting by a woman who wrote she needed transportation to get to work. No bus came close enough and she couldn’t afford a car.

Father Sparrow was grumpy. “I went to the river to bathe in our favorite place,” he told Mother Sparrow who was sitting in the nest on her eggs, “and there was Crocodile, splashing muddy water everywhere. When I politely asked him to be more careful, he told me to find another place.”

Nancy King is a widely published author and a professor emerita at the University of Delaware, where she has taught theater, drama, playwriting, creative writing, and multidisciplinary studies with an emphasis on world literature. She has published seven previous works of nonfiction and five novels. Her new memoir, Breaking the Silence, explores the power of stories in healing from trauma and abuse. Her career has emphasized the use of her own experience in being silenced to encourage students to find their voices and to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with authenticity, as a way to add meaning to their lives.
